Lake Baikal, located in southeastern Siberia, Russia, is the world’s deepest and oldest freshwater lake, reaching depths of 1,642 meters and dating back 25–30 million years. It holds about 20% of the planet’s unfrozen freshwater and is renowned for its crystal-clear waters, with visibility often exceeding 40 meters.
The lake hosts over 3,600 species of plants and animals, many of which are endemic, including the unique Baikal seal.
